There are some things non-dog-people will never understand.
Like the fact that your dog is smarter than anyone else gives him credit for.
and how you can look at your dog rolling around in the mud and still think he’s the most adorable thing.
and that a walk isn’t as much fun without your dog, no matter how beautiful the spot.
This is why I love it when I get the chance to meet up with like-minded dog owners, whether it be for a shoot, a walk or just a get together over a cup of coffee.
I joined the TRONDogs facebook page around a year ago and it has been a great way to get to know other dog owners and introduce my dogs to life outside of the farm. With close to 250 members on the page including dog trainers and vets, a huge variety of dog breeds participating and walks organised around the Waikato most weekends, it is the best way to get to know other Waikato dog owners, ask for advice with any issues you are having with your dogs and explore new places to walk with your dog.
With such a range of people and dogs in the group, it is not only a good way to socialise with other dog owners but it’s also good for dogs of all personality types to grow in confidence and work on manners in a social situation. The numbers on each walk range from a few people up to a dozen, with all sorts of breeds participating from Maltese and Daschunds to Border Collies, Huskies and German Shepherds with a variety of temperaments. The group is great at catering to different quirks each dog may have, such as dogs that aren’t dog friendly or a less confident out and about and will organise the group accordingly during the walk to keep everyone happy. Following walks the group often has a coffee at a local dog-friendly cafe to discuss all things dog related, whether it’s what happened during the week, training issues or sharing experiences about coping with various canine medical conditions – perfect to get other perspectives on any issues you may be having with your dog.
If you would like to join in on the fun, you can find the facebook group here. I’m looking forward to catching up with some of you and your dogs on walks!
