Easy Walk, 1 Hour + – Te Awa River Walks, Horotiu-Fonterra Section (Waikato)

There is a great network of trails running alongside the Waikato River. Recently my favourite has been the Horotiu section. On the Horotiu side of the Horotiu bridge, there is a small carpark with access to the river trails. From here you can go left and end up at a small open grass area, or right and go for a good walk along the track.  You can walk as far or as little as you like, typically we go around 3km each way. This is a very popular trail, and on weekends you may come across many other dog walkers, cyclists, runners and family groups. It’s easy walking with a combination of concrete and board walks, wheelchair friendly and suitable for all to enjoy.
Horotiu River Walk

There are several points along this area where you can access the river so the dogs can have a swim – brilliant on hot days! There are often boats and other watercraft going along the river, and there is a strong current so best not to let the dogs go too far out.

Car parking – Yes, a small carpark with overflow on the other side of the road for when it is busy. Heading from Horotiu, the main carpark is on the right just before the bridge.
Toilets – Not in this area.
Bins – I think there may be one near the carpark? Otherwise take your rubbish away with you.
Water – Good access to the river for the dogs to have a swim and a drink, otherwise take some with you.
Other – This trail can be very busy, especially on weekends, so if you have a nervous dog you may like to avoid it at these times.
